A lot of people love energy drinks. It provides them with a sense of hyper focus – enhanced attention and reaction speeds – a perceivable increase in cognitive performance. However, some components in these energy drinks appear to have serious negative effects on one’s health. In a study done in Texas heart cells, that came in contact with some energy drinks, displayed signs of impaired cardiac function.
“Therefore, we hope that the consumers will carefully weigh the performance-enhancing benefits of these beverages versus the emerging data that suggests that they may have real adverse effects.”
- The global sales of energy drinks were estimated at $53 billion in 2018 and are only continuing to grow rapidly.
- Consuming many of the energy drinks could lead to arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, increased blood pressure, and other issues.
- The researchers were not able to figure out whether all energy drinks have significant adverse effects.
